Lambton County residents seeking information during a major emergency can call 211. Ontario 211 operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year, providing service in 175 languages. On a day-to-day basis, residents can call 211 to find out about a wide variety of community services such as childcare, employment services, financial assistance, government programs and services for seniors. During times of emergency, 211 will provide specific and authoritative information that will help residents cope with and recover from an emergency. Your family can sign up to receive official alerts through “My Community Notification Network”, also known as “MyCNN”.
MyCNN subscribers receive notifications about incidents that affect their home, workplace, school and more. MyCNN can notify subscribers by telephone, cellphone, text and email (or all of these methods). If you are not a subscriber, but have a publicly listed telephone number, you may receive a telephone message, but public directories are not always complete or up-to-date, so you could be missed. Sheltering is appropriate when conditions require that you seek protection in your home, place of employment or other location when there is a threat to personal safety (i.e. hazardous spills, dangers predators).
Emergencies that require a shelter-in-place include:
- A hazardous substance in the air
- A tornado
- A severe winter storm
- An earthquake
- Event that could harm the public
If the emergency is related to an environmental hazard:
- Close all windows and doors
- Tape around windows, air ducts, and vents
- Turn off fans, heating and air conditioning systems
- Close the fireplace damper
- Move to an interior room above ground level
In all other cases:
- Listen to the radio for updates and do not go outside until authorities say it is safe to do so
The length of time you are required to shelter may be short, such as during a tornado warning, or long, such as during a winter storm. It is important that you stay in shelter until local authorities say it is safe to leave.
